As a niche segment, vehicles with all-wheel drive appear to have acquired an unstoppable momentum, and when judged from underlying sales trends are now more popular than ever.

At a time when even inexpensive small cars with few frills have clearly failed to excite Europe’s recession wary consumers even remotely, and closely watched fuel prices have continued their inexorable march to new record levels, more European new car buyers than ever have continued to dump their conventional front or rear-driven passenger cars in favour of a trendy four-wheel-drive motor
