As recently as 2002, the entire contingent of volume
brands such as Volkswagen, Ford and Renault, but
also Japanese marques like Toyota, Nissan, Honda and
Mazda, still captured just over eight-in-ten of the
new cars sold in Western Europe.

Fast forward to the first two
months of this year, and the data shows that their
sales share had slipped to just over seven-in-ten
sales, which marks their
lowest-ever share
