USA - Rising US car sales tide turns back to less thirsty cars
Double-digit growth – few problems

One quarter into the current year, and whichever way this year’s US light vehicle sales figures are looked at, the contrast between this and last year could barely be sharper.

In all, since the very beginning of this year sentiment among America’s consumers has swung to a markedly more optimistic mood, which in turn is echoed in latest full year vehicle sales expectations.

A case in point, Morgan Stanley raised its sales estimate for 2012 in the US to 14.8 million from an earlier estimate of 14 million.

That compares with last year’s 12.8m light vehicle sales, and reflects the gathering optimism about this and next year’s US economic outlook
