New car demand in Germany, a
comparative oasis of calm in this
year’s storm-tossed eurozone, has
held up well so far. In April, which saw sagging sales in the vast majority of Europe’s markets, Germany’s car market rose by a trendbucking 2.9 per cent, coming in the wake of a 3.4 per cent gain in March and virtually unchanged sales in both January and February. The upbeat message of these domestic car sales figures was overshadowed however by a contrasting performance from both car exports and production. Car exports, traditionally a dynamo for German car makers, has hit a bad patch during recent months, with VDA figures showing a 14 per cent drop in April, opening up a 5 per cent deficit at this year’s one-third stage. A 10 per cent dip in April car production couldn’t fail but dampen the spirits further  German exports slowing in April
