WESTERN EUROPE - Little interest in hybrids in Europe, for now at least

The contrast between this and last year’s hybrid and diesel car fortunes could barely be sharper.

While hybrids appeared to be going nowhere in particular, more of Europe’s fuel price shocked consumers continued to pile into the diesel car market.

Booted into action by the now widespread introduction of CO2-linked vehicle taxes with teeth, allied to further notable progress on the now closely watched fuel-economy front, the popularity of diesel-fuelled cars zoomed to a new all time high.

Recording their highest sales share levels in West European history, diesels captured a record 55.3 per cent of this year’s first quarter market, thus topping the already high 54.7 per cent level held during the same period last year.
