Booted into action by the now widespread introduction of CO2-linked vehicle taxes with teeth, allied to further notable progress on the now closely watched fuel-economy front, the popularity of diesel-fuelled cars zoomed to a new all time high.

Recording their highest sales share levels in West European history, diesels captured a record 55.3 per cent of this year’s first quarter market, thus topping the already high 54.7 per cent level held during the same period last year.
