Probably more than ever, for some fortunate carmakers last year’s full-year West European car sales data tells a happy story of blooming new car sales. At the same time, though, the same data also highlights the contrasting sorry tale of other struggling market participants whose same year fortunes appear to have sunk to seemingly bottomless depths. Two major car groups in particular have again headed last year’s upwardly mobile

Volkswagen Group, already the fastest gaining carmaker in the leading pack, ended last year with yet another all-time sales share record, thus setting once more a regional milestone.

So much so in fact, that Volkswagen Group brands, including the newly added Porsche brand, accounted for almost a quarter of last year’s notably slimmer and continually ebbing West European new car market
