Europe’s Crossover craze finds echoes in India’s slipping car market

Even the most casual glance at last year’s Indian car market points to some interesting similarities with recent car sales developments in West Europe’s ebbing new car market: consumers’ seemingly unwavering fondness for the industry’s latest SUV-Crossovers.

While India’s overall car buying public appears to have lost much of its earlier displayed willingness to take on new debt at a time of flagging consumer confidence, to some the SUV-Crossover segment appears to have lost little of its earlier attraction.

Popularity of SUV-Crossovers has fired traders imaginations

Signs that India’s car buying taste is changing are easily identified.

While last year’s sales of Maruti’s top-selling Alto dropped almost 8 per cent to some 286,800 units, accompanied by a fall of almost 9 per cent from Maruti’s Wagon R, most SUV-Crossover posted substantial sales gains
