Worst start for more than two decades – on course for 20-year low of just 11.4m sales

West Europe’s car dealers suffered their worst January sales for more than twenty years as more confidence-sapped consumers stayed away from showrooms packed with appealing new cars of near unprecedented variety and value.

This year’s poor start translates into the worst underlying trend rate since 1993, when full year sales
eventually slumped to a 28-year low of just 11.2 million new cars.

On a consolatory note, given that too much cannot be read into the result of just a single month, consensus expectations for this year’s turnout are for a comparatively modest 3 per cent dip in West Europe’s full year car sales to around 11.4m units.

However, if January’s 8.9 per cent drop is a reliable guide to this year’s underlying trend, this year’s West European new cars sales would slump to less than 11m units, marking the worst full year sales for close on three decades
