First faint signs of life have weakened again in West Europe’s electric car market

Norway, with 1,099 electric car registrations this January, was again the front-runner in the sector - West Europe’s other 15 markets, including all the region’s major markets monitored exclusively by AID every month, shared the remaining 1,849 electric cars registered this January in the whole of Western Europe

After a promising-looking brief interlude of comparative buoyancy during last year’s closing months, proof to some that Europe’s electric car market does have a pulse after all, since the start of this year these first faint signs of life have weakened again.

January’s electric car registration total for Western Europe – 2,948 units – poured buckets of ice cold water on the electric car industry’s fanciful idea that today's European motorists are gradually beginning to take a serious interest in the industry’s latest electric cars.

AID’s own exclusive figures show that January’s total haul for the industry compares to the 5,371 battery-fuelled cars registered only in the previous month.

Expressed in cold sobering statistics: compared with December’s outwardly encouraging looking turnout, flattered a great deal by time-limited government tax benefits, January’s electric car sales took a headlong 46 per cent plunge...more
