Europe’s car market got off to a fine start

West European passenger car sales history plus 2016 forecast

According to AID’s own provisional figures, West Europe’s car markets started off the year on the right foot. The region’s January new car sales increased for a 27th month in a row posting a 6.6 per cent increase from the same period last year. This marks the strongest January sales gain in the region’s current recovery phase, which first started in September 2013. With no detectable heat loss, January car sales were higher than a year ago in 15 of the region’s 17 markets regularly tracked by AID, including all major markets

Early days, but the good start to the current year, coming in the wake of last year’s stronger than earlier expected 9 per cent rise in new car sales, gives rise to the upbeat prospect that for the second year running West Europe’s new car sales could expand markedly faster than generally expected.

Releasing its latest forecast during the first week of this month, Daimler said it expects only “slight growth” in the 2016 overall new car markets of both Western Europe and China. 

That sentiment is shared by Hans-Werner Kaas, senior partner and head of the McKinsey Automotive & Assembly practice in Detroit, saying earlier last month that this year’s new car sales in Western Europe “will grow between three and four per cent
