Finally, after a long drawn-out overture, from the middle of next month Germany’s prospective electric car buyers will at least be tempted by a jointly funded industry/government €4,000 subsidy – buyers of qualifying plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) will benefit from a slightly slimmer €3,000 subsidy

Despite stiff publicly aired opposition from the very top of Germany’s finance ministry, today Germany’s government gave into persistent hard lobbying from Germany’s most powerful industrial group.

Evidently keen to get this particular ball rolling with minimum delay, the slightly lower than expected €4,000 electric car subsidy will be on offer from the middle of next month.

Buyers of qualifying PHEVs will benefit from a €3,000 subsidy.

In a move intended to silence critics claiming that government funded electric car sales incentives add up to unfair subsidies for Germany’s small group of better off consumers who can already well afford to pay the full unsubsidised price of such cars, Germany’s government will pay just half of the unveiled subsidy.

Accordingly, just €2,000 of the €4,000 subsidy comes out of autoindustry pockets.

Cars priced at €60,000 and over, will not qualify for these subsidies, which rules out the otherwise popular Tesla Model S, which was the 4th best-seller in Germany’s 1st quarter electric car sales league
