Europe’s car sales on track for 10-year high as slowdown fails to materialise

March was a firecracker month for West Europe’s new car sales: a bumper 1.8m cars were sold, 10.2 per cent more than during the same month last year, according to AID’s provisional sales estimates. However, that’s about as good as it gets, chiefly because March was buoyed by special factors such as two extra working days in a number of European markets

The adrenaline high of this year’s first quarter car sales bounce, boosting first quarter sales by 7.4 per cent, will likely wither as the current year unfolds.

Nevertheless, even allowing for a notable slowing in the markets’ pulse rate as the current year unfolds, AID forecasters still believe that this year’s West European car market will still sweep past the 14 million threshold for the first time since 2007...
