After just one month of falling heavy truck sales in Western Europe so far this year, pulled down chiefly by two fewer working days this April, last month, to the relief of Europe’s truck makers, saw the return to normal service
Truck sales at 16t GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) in May trumped last year’s same month level with a strong 15.1 per cent surge.
This, the sixth rise in sales in the past seven months brings this year’s cumulative sales gain after five months to 4.3 per cent, with sales rising to 103,514 units, according to ACEA.
With April’s statistical hiccup out of the way, West Europe’s heavy truck market got back into its stride in May.
Last month’s healthy-looking double-digit sales gain adds credence to the now widely shared view that West Europe’s economy is still firing on all cylinders.
As half-time approaches in Europe’s current truck sales year, the biggest positive surprise for the autoindustry has been the underlying strength of the rebounding Eurozone economy.
A reflection of these upbeat developments, May’s heavy truck sales rose in all of the region’s major markets.
