Private buyers breathe life into Britainís significant March car market

Britainís car market unexpectedly bounced back in this yearís opening quarter, thanks entirely to a 1.8 per cent rise in sales in what generally ranks as Britainís best selling car sales month, marking the first rise in sales in five months. Instead of the widely expected small sales lag at the first quarter stage, Britainís car market rose by just under 1 per cent to 563,556 units

For a country mired by a double-dip recession, Britainís car market has held up well. In a month when growing numbers of Britainís confidence-sapped consumers were expected to steer well clear of richly stocked car showrooms, it comes as a surprise to some that private rather than business buyers were responsible for the encouraging small uplift in March sales.

Thatís born out by figures showing that just over half the cars bought in March were driven off dealer forecourts by private buyers.

Thatís a 7.4 per cent rise in sales, which more than made up for a small dip in fleet sales
