West European Quarterly Passenger Car Sales Movements 2013/2012

Largely thanks to a 16th successive rise in UK car sales, growing by a strong 13.4 per cent last month, West Europe’s outlook for carmakers suddenly looks less gloomy. But the timing for a genuine and lasting recovery still seems almost anybody’s guess.

West Europe’s new car registrations fell by a modest 6.2 per cent last month, continuing a gradually slowing rate of decline that first began at the start of this year’s second quarter.

June’s markedly better than feared turnout, propped up single-handedly by a 16th successive sales gain in the UK, which saw a bullish 13.4 per cent jump in June car sales, narrowed West Europe’s sales shortfall at the halfway point to 6.6 per cent.

If the very latest batch of West European car sales numbers can be taken as the start of a trend, Europe’s decimated car market has already begun to revitalise itself, albeit at a painstakingly slow rate...more
