April sees first car sales rise after 18 successive months of tumbling sales

West European Passenger Car Sales history

First warm breeze after 18 months of chill in a car market that appeared moribund for months, but Aprilís spirit-lifting picture, showing a seemingly trendbucking 1.9 per cent rise in car sales, is nowhere near as rosy as it looks.

Jump in April passenger car sales in Western Europe


A near two per cent rise in West Europeís April car sales, like a first taste of warm spring sunshine after the longest and most drawn-out winter for decades, simply couldnít fail but trigger a large sigh of relief from Europeís carmakers, importers and distributors.

Aprilís minor uplift in sales to just over 1 million units was the first advance after 18 successive months of tumbling sales, tempting some optimists to the view that at long last the very worst of the economic crisis in the eurozone may finally be over.
