If ever proof was needed that West Europe’s new car market was finally on the mend, it is surely that Greece, the most battered and bruised market in the eurozone, saw a rise in September new car sales.

Undoubtedly most encouraging for the autoindustry, and yet another sign that the continent’s longest and deepest car sales famine for decades may be about to give way to at least a moderate and sustainable recovery, September sales were up on a year ago in some of the region’s hardest struck car markets.

A case in point, September sales in Spain, Portugal and Ireland topped last year’s same month level by a respective 28.8, 15.6 and 28 per cent.

However, Spain’s hot September car sales streak was due at least partly to one extra working day and the reintroduction of scrappage incentives for all those willing to scrap a car ten years and older in exchange for a new lower emission one...more
