In both October and the year to date, electric cars have scarcely made a ripple in West Europe’s nascent car sales recovery, but one development in particular simply couldn’t fail but attract the serious attention of electric car market watchers. During the month and the ten month to date, Nissan’s Leaf emerged as the top dog in this small pack of battery-powered cars in Western Europe. In both October and the year to date, it was the region’s top-selling electric car, followed in respective second and third position by Renault’s ZOE and Opel/Vauxhall’s Ampera. Two factors in particular contributed to Leaf’s victory. Despite the clearly audible firing of the starting gun, Renault’s ZOE made a false start after failing to get out of the starting blocks. Nissan’s longer established Leaf, in pin-sharp contrast, continued to performed strongly in all of the region’s main electric markets.
