Hard slog on both sides of the Atlantic 
for EVs

Still very early days, but on both sides of the Atlantic - in both the short and medium term - it is hard to be optimistic about electric cars

Apart from a convergence in taste on SUV-Crossovers, still Europe’s hottest sales trend, when presented with the need to look for a new car, and in particular the choice of engine, European and US new car buyers appear to have precious little in common. 

However, on the topical issue of electric cars, both US and European consumers still appear to harbour similar deep seated reservations with the result that so far these battery-powered cars may have been a big hit with the media, but have tempted few genuine buyers to make the plunge on either side of the Atlantic.

These developments, with genuine electric cars accounting for less than half a per cent of this year’s four months US Light-Vehicle sales and a virtually matching 0.4 per cent in April, are to an extent also echoed in Europe. 

AID’s exclusively compiled figures reveal that so far this year electric cars have made scarcely a ripple; a view driven home by a four months West European car sales share of 0.4 per cent and 0.37 per cent during April itself. 

And this is in spite of outwardly tempting purchase incentives in a great many countries, such as France’s €7,000, as well as encouraging investment in a mainly rural recharging infrastructure
