Europeís May electric car market still without hoped for traction
Another good month for electric car sales gains, but impressive statistical gains donít tell the whole story

Mayís electric car registrations in Western Europe rose to 4,656 units, thanks to a more than doubling of registrations in Germany and yet another month of strong sales expansion in Norway, where again more electric cars first took to the road than in any other West European market.

 Almost halfway through the current year, and thanks to Mayís strong gains, the number of electric cars registered in the region leapt to 21,471 units, up almost 80 per cent on the same five months
period last year, according to AIDís own figures.

Starting from an extremely low base, and following the first time market debut of brand-new electric car models from some of the regionís heavyweight carmakers such as Volkswagen and BMW was expected to result in a significant uplift in registrations. 

Whilst Norway saw yet another month of business as usual, chiefly another month of outwardly impressive headway from the countryís massively subsidised electric cars, all those with a vested interest in the underlying health of underlying electric car demand in Europe may also be cheered by an encouraging turnout in Germany. 

May registrations of electric cars in Europeís biggest car market more than doubled to some 1,073 units from the 429 registered there during the same month last year. 

The steep gain was totally expected, and doesnít necessarily reflect a sudden surge in underlying
consumer demand
