Trucks take another wrong turn in May, but it’s not what its seems
Not so much a sign of a stalling truck sales recovery, but a reflection of last year’s extensive pre-buying of Euro 5 trucks

Mercedes-Benz heavy truck 2014 May sales

Sales of heavy trucks in Western Europe took yet another small wobble in May, with sales falling for the second successive month in a row, after posting contrasting gains in each of the opening three months. Broadly in line with today’s consensus industry forecasts, Mercedes Trucks expects a “slight” dip in this year’s overall West European heavy truck market, owing to last year’s extensive pre-buying of cheaper Euro 5 trucks, which pulled forward sales from this year

May sales of trucks in the 16t and above GVW class fell by just 1.4 per cent, coming in the wake of a similar slight dip in April.

In consequence, since the beginning of April the region’s heavy truck market has already shed half of the gains posted during the brief and previously unexpected rise in first quarter registration.

While first quarter registrations were still 10.4 per cent up on last year, just two months later these cumulative gains for the five months to April were halved to just 5.4 per cent.

The industry expects these trends to continue during the second half, believing that this is not so much a sign of a stalling truck sales recovery, but a reflection of last year’s extensive pre-buying of Euro 5 trucks, which inevitably led to temporary distortions of true underlying demand patterns...more
