West Europe’s May car sales grow at slowest pace in 18 months

Good news is that May saw the 21st successive rise in West European car sales. The not-so-good news is that last month the market barely grew at all. AID’s non rose-tinted view is that May’s abrupt slowing in the market’s rate of advance to a mere 0.9 per cent could easily be attributable to two fewer working days in the month than in May last year

Acea figures reveal that sales of cars in Western Europe in May rose by only 0.9 per cent to 1.07 million compared with 1.06 million the year before - the slowest monthly rate of growth in almost two years.

The latest small rise brings the cumulative car sales total to 5.6m after 5-months, up 6.8 per cent against the corresponding period last year, according to Acea figures.

Far from fanning likely fears of an abrupt slowing in the region’s car sales recovery during the second half, AID’s market observers believe this may be little more than a temporary check, rather than a fundamental shift.
