What a difference a couple of weeks can make. 

As recently as the middle of last month, during the Frankfurt motorshow, senior members of Europe’s leading carmaker, candidly confident, were still holding court to the world’s attentive automotive media. 

Parading among their latest creations at their massive imposing show stand, the company still stood out as a genuine winner, respected not only by the world’s media, but no less so by its smaller and patently less successful peers

Just over two weeks later, Volkswagen’s formerly much-respected CEO had resigned, and some of the company’s most senior engineers were allegedly placed on gardening leave.
