Rise in August car sales eases fears of autumn car sales chill

West European August passenger car sales


August new car sales in Western Europe, thanks in no small part to two extra working days, rose 8 per cent, marking the 35th gain in the past 36 months, according to AID

The latest sales gain in what traditionally ranks the least reliable month for statistics because of the long summer holidays, brings the cumulative car sales total to 9.4m after 8-months, up 7.1 per cent over the same period last year. 

Nearly three-quarters through the current year, defying a marginally less upbeat outlook from some forecasters, AIDís crystal ball gazers have stuck to their earlier projections when saying that this yearís West European car sales remain on track to touch the 14m level for the first time since 2007.

West Europeís new car market rebounded strongly in August posting yet another strong gain. 

Last monthís good turnout - a traditional holiday month - provides further reassurance that Julyís slight tumble, the first dip in sales after 34 months of unbroken car sales growth, may have been a momentary blip caused by two fewer working dayís in most regional markets. 

Hard evidence that the stored up heat has not yet dissipated, August sales were well up on last year in all of the regionís major markets, where sales rose by between 3.3 per cent in the UK and a bullish 20.1 per cent in Italy
