Volkswagen’s Golf was West Europe’s top-selling car in 2012, outselling its nearest rival – Ford Focus – more than two-to-one

The prestigious title of top-selling car in Western Europe last year went again to Volkswagen’s Golf, with full year sales of 480,500 units or 4.1 per cent market penetration.

West Europe’s new car buyers, seemingly undeterred by the knowledge that VW’s Golf VI was about to be replaced by an all-new model last autumn, still went for the run-out Golf in droves.

So much so in fact, that last year it still outsold Ford’s Focus - its nearest rival - more than two-to-one.

The Golf was generally expected to have a difficult year because it was well known to the public at large that Europe’s perennial top-seller was due to be replaced by the all-new Golf VII in autumn.
