Uphill slog for hybrid cars
Toyota single-handedly propped up last year’s West European market for hybrid cars

The good news is that last year’s sales of hybrid cars bucked the poor car sales trend with an outwardly impressive looking gain of 22.1 per cent to some 125,750 cars, according to exclusively compiled AID figures.

But the not so good news for the industry is that last year’s sales share of hybrids barely reached 1 per cent of the region’s new car market.

The state of the hybrid market is such that the sole effort of just one manufacturer, Toyota, has single-handedly propped up the market.

Without Toyota’s numbers, last year’s hybrid car sales in Western Europe reached just 24,000 units and that accounted for a trifling 0.2 per cent of total new car sales that year.

Toyota, which was first on the scene with a volume built hybrid has further tightened its stranglehold
on Europe’s still tiny hybrid car market, to the point where more than four in five of all hybrid cars sold in the region are Toyota Group products
