Green shoots are finally sprouting across West Europe’s drought-struck automotive landscape, tempting some market watchers to the cautiously upbeat view that from now on the long-ailing patient could be strong enough to walk totally unaided. While autoindustry bigwigs will breathe a sigh of relief, there is no room for complacency says AID

The strongest sign yet of a likely turnaround in West Europe’s deepest and longest car sales drought for close on two decades has been detected in latest Acea car sales numbers.

Sales of new cars in western Europe rose by 5.5 per cent to 1.14m units last month, accompanied by upbeat signs in the vast majority of Europe’s recession-worn markets that the smothering blanket of gloom was finally lifting.

Lifting autoindustry spirits, September’s new car sales fell in only six of the 18 markets regularly tracked by AID, including two of West Europe’s major markets. 

September’s positive turnout narrowed the deficit at the three-quarter stage to just 4 per cent, less than half the rate of decline still seen at this year’s first quarter stage.
