The contrast between the various volume carmakers in West Europeís markedly improved September car market could barely be sharper. Sensing that at long last the tide was ready for turning on the European car sales front, and with dealer forecourts packed to the rafters with latest head-turning cars, the gloves came off for a bare knuckle fight 

That is the message from a near 20 per cent jump in Renaultís September car sales, crowning Franceís second volume carmaker as Septemberís biggest notable gainer in West Europeís rekindled car sales arena according to Acea. 

A further sign of the carmakerís determination to come out fighting, September sales of its still high-flying Dacia budget brand soared by almost a half from a year ago, buoyed in no small measure by a promising start in Britainís still flourishing car market.

Renaultís opening salvo across the bows of its direct rivals was echoed to an extent by Ford. 

Driven by the same determination to strike the iron while itís hot, Ford can look back at yet another good month. 

Like Renault, albeit on a more modest scale, Ford also outperformed Septemberís overall market with a 6 per cent sales gain.

Their heaviest shelling, it seems, was aimed at fragile Peugeot-CitroŽn bunkers. 

In pin-sharp contrast with Renaultís and Fordís superior September game play, Franceís leading carmaker slipped further down the slippery slope, this time with a near 2.9 per cent slide in sales. 

On the face of it, the Volkswagen brand has adopted a comparative back-seat position in the regionís raging car sales battle.
