Even though China's car sales growth has slowed down since the start of this year, the near 11 per cent growth seen there during this year’s first quarter is still envied in all of the world’s remaining main car markets

Confirmation that the rattling growth still seen in China’s car market during much of last year has slowed down came with AID compiled car sales figures for this year’s opening quarter, suggesting that the breakneck pace of advance seen during last year’s 3rd and 4th quarter has given way to a less exhilarating but more sustainable rate of growth.

Despite the more modest rate of climb seen during this year’s opening quarter, accompanied by yet another double-digit rise in March, China’s passenger car market - the world’s biggest - is still gaining height. 

The question foremost on the minds of auto industry strategists is not so much whether 2014 will see yet another Chinese car sales record, but by how much last year's record will be surpassed.

True to the motto that where there is light there is shadow, most of China’s market-dominating foreign car makers got out of the blocks quickly. 

At the same time, though, the vast majority of China’s intrinsic domestic carmakers were left in the dust by markedly faster sprinting leaders Volkswagen Group, Hyundai and GM.
