December’s heavy truck market more than halved 
Striking contrasts seen in last year’s European truck sales fortunes

West Europe’s heavy truck market was expected to take a severe hammering during the closing months of last year because of the near riotous pre-buying of Euro 5 trucks in the prior year pre-Christmas period. 

Fully in line with earlier truck industry forecasts, December’s sales of trucks at 16t GVW and above drove off a cliff.

Acea supplied figures show a more than halving in December sales, thus ending last year with a 6 per cent drop in sales.

West Europe’s heavy truck sales slipped back to 185,325 units from the artificially inflated 197,215 still registered during the whole of 2013.

To no one’s surprise in truck industry circles, December’s sales didn’t fall but plunge. 

So much so in fact that sales took a severe nosedive in the vast majority of markets.
