Prestige sector car battle – Mercedes’ star still climbing

Premium Manufacturer January to May World passenger car sales

The prestige sector car brand best known for its star emblem has now been growing sales and market share for months on end. So much so in fact, that for Mercedes there appears no end in sight for the continuing flow of good news

If anything, the way things are looking right now, Stuttgart’s Mercedes luxury carmaker seems to be able to do no wrong.

But as almost every market observer knows only too well, in this business, particularly at a time when for the autoindustry itself significant lasting change looms directly ahead, the flow of good news hardly ever lasts for long.

For the Mercedes prestige car brand the upbeat flow of positive trading data continued earlier this month with news of yet another sharp car sales gain in some if not all of the world’s most significant car sales regions.

A rosy picture was marred only by a small setback in the seemingly cooling US car market where Mercedes’ prestige car sales in May fell 8.2 per cent, resulting in a 1 per cent sales shortfall in the US at the five months stage.

By today’s industry standards, the news has been so good, and everything has gone so swimmingly well for the Mercedes car brand on virtually all fronts, that even ardent autoindustry observers can be forgiven for wondering what happened to the autoindustry’s familiar cyclicality.
