More pure electric cars have already been sold so far this year than the whole of last year. In Western Europe, with just three months left to the end of the year, the electric car industry has already broken all previous sales records, registering a total of 96,882 BEVs so far this year, already marginally up on full year 2016 sales, according to AID’s own exclusive numbers. For several years, electric car registrations in Western Europe flat-lined at little more than half-a-percentage point of the region’s total new car market.
Now, however, they are growing.
Judged from the pace seen in Europe during the past three or so months the underlying health of the segment has improved markedly.
That’s fuelled in no small measure by astonishing high ongoing growth in Norway plus a notable sudden pick up in car buyers’ interest in Germany and a number of other West European markets, albeit from last year’s very low levels.
West Europe’s September electric car sales activity continued to expand at a markedly faster than earlier expected pace, according to AID’s own compiled figures.
Testament to the faster selling rate, September’s sales share of pure electric cars (BEVs) reached 1.1 per cent. Underlining the positive message, that’s the third time in the past four months that BEVs captured at least 1 per cent or more of West Europe’s BEV market.

According to AID’s own exclusive figures, September’s BEV sales in the region soared nearly a third to 14,887 units, increasing West Europe’s BEV sales share after nine months to 0.9 per cent from 0.6 per cent the year before.
