Germany’s crisis-rocked Volkswagen Group, condemned to pay tens of billions of euros in both rectification and penalties for its part in the market-changing dieselgate scandal, has overtaken Renault to become West Europe’s best-selling electric car (BEV) brand. A first tell-tale sign of what the future holds in store, this is the first time that this much-chastened German company has captured this closely watched position
Volkswagen, thanks chiefly to a more than threefold jump in e-Golf sales in Norway, sold 2,193 fully electric cars (BEV) in West Europe’s October car market,
according to AID’s exclusive sales numbers.
In what ranks essentially as a photo-finish in West Europe’s electric car sales league, Volkswagen captured October’s coveted title by a hair's breadth.
The company’s regional BEV sales this October, made up almost entirely of its e-Golf plus token quantities of e-ups, rose to 2,193 units.
October’s West European BEV sales gap between long-sector-leading Renault and Volkswagen, the new kid on Europe’s BEV block, amounted to a microscopic 72 units.
e-Golf hot on Zoe’s heels
Moreover, this October VW’s e-Golf came well within striking distance of Renault’s Zoe.
While moving hot on its heels, its courageous attempt to nudge ahead of Zoe in October were foiled by a one off development.
A steep rise in October’s Zoe registrations in Spain, consisting in the main of some 500 registered units for a Madrid car
sharing fleet, simply couldn’t fail but frustrate the e-Golf’s October chances of also unseating Renault’s Zoe as West Europe’s top-selling BEV.
Although the Volkswagen marque captured West Europe’s electric car sales crown in October - a first for the brand
- Renault still leads the region’s 10-months cumulative BEV car sales
league.
That’s due in large part to the Zoe’s domestic stranglehold presence in France and its remarkably strong performance in Volkswagen’s German
backyard...
