The writing is on the wall all across Europe: More and more of Europe’s trendy new car buyers are dumping their conventionally styled cars in favour of fashionable SUV/Crossovers, which remain the far and away hottest trend among Europe’s automotive fashionistas

The contrast between electric cars and hybrids at one end of Europe’s automotive spectrum and SUV/Crossovers on the extreme other end, simply couldn’t be more startling.

Whilst cheque-ready SUV-Crossover buyers across most of Europe are continuing to form orderly queues outside dealers’ richly stocked showrooms, carmakers are also discovering to their peril that the vast majority of Europe’s car buying public still appears not the least bit interested in today’s electric cars or for that matter in Prius-type petrol electric hybrids.

So much so in fact, that in Europe’s otherwise sparsely populated car showrooms sales of popular SUV-Crossovers were up almost 7 per cent last year, even as overall new car sales in Western Europe fell almost like a stone for five years running to their lowest level in almost 15 years...more
