For Mercedes, the new year got off to a fine start. 

Thanks to a blitz-like rush out of the starting blocks in China, where Mercedes upped its January sales by almost a half to just over 24,000 cars, on the global stage Mercedes outpaced all its nearest main rivals. 

Its January car sales gain, with sales rising by 15.4 per cent to 109,477 cars, was unmatched by any of its German compatriots, reports AID.

Audi and BMW, by comparison, upped their respective January global car sales by 11.7 and 9.2 per cent. 

But both Bavarian carmakers took some comfort from the fact that despite Mercedes’ slightly faster rate of car sales growth, the brand with the star emblem on its bonnet still remains at least one step behind in sales volume terms. 

At least for now.
